The Challenge

In such a competitive sector, PSCL Beds wanted to increase conversion rates and boost sales. As a smaller, less well-known retailer, it also wanted to ensure its customers felt more confident in choosing PSCL Beds over its competitors. Previously, the company had witnessed some hesitation in the buyer journey and customer drop-off due to its lack of profile and knew that customers needed a little more encouragement to choose PSCL Beds.

The company had witnessed Taggstar messaging in action and was interested to see how the technology could work for its business, despite being much smaller. “I saw social proof messaging on Argos’ site, inspected the code to see what technology they were using and found Taggstar,” says PSCL Beds’ spokesperson.

He says he was impressed with what Taggstar offered. “It’s natural that when you shop in a store or go to a restaurant, you see the traffic and think ‘this place must be good because so many people are there’. There wasn’t a similar concept for websites. There are some social proof plugins and other options, but I always found them to look very fake and in-your-face. However, when I came across Taggstar’s social proof messaging on Argos’ website, I thought it was very subtle, very professional looking, and I thought ‘it’s going to have a real impact on our customers’. I was very certain it was going to drive up our sales.”

The Results

He was right. PSCL Beds became one of the first customers for Taggstar’s Social Proof Pro Plan, built on the same technology as Taggstar’s Social Proof Enterprise Plan but designed for smaller, growing retailers and brands.

The A/B test of social proof messaging ran for nine days with a full-funnel rollout that included messages on PLP, PDP and basket. The test included the full seven messages available in the Pro Plan solution, including ‘In Demand! X sold in X days’, ‘Popular! X viewing right now’, ‘Last sold X minutes ago’ and ‘X added to bag in X days’.

The nine-day test exceeded expectations, delivering a 9.19% uplift in conversion rate across mobile and desktop that generated a £19,000 uplift in revenue and a £50 increase in average order value (AOV). When annualised, the projected ROI is 598%, also far exceeding expectations.

“If you have an e-commerce business and are selling high-value items, it is definitely worth investing. It’s an excellent, transformative technology for smaller businesses, as well as corporate giants.”

The Results

The company spokesperson said that, as a small business, all technology decisions are carefully considered. “We’re very careful about what technology we bring in and do a lot of due diligence before we actually decide to go for something.”

That meant he had clear ambitions of what he hoped for from Taggstar. “I knew exactly what we wanted to achieve and I knew what was possible,” he says. “I was pretty certain that we were going to have an uplift in revenue and conversion rates, but it was surprisingly good.”

He believes that social proof is a perfect fit for giving consumers confidence to shop with lesser-known businesses like his. “When you’re spending £700 on average on a mattress, for example, having some social proof is very reassuring, especially for a brand like ours. That’s why I think it’s very important. We are not very well-known. PSCL shifted the business online four years ago, and we’ve not done a lot of branding, so customer validation really helps. We use Trustpilot for reviews, but we needed something to complement it because not everybody will click on Trustpilot. That’s where Taggstar comes in. It’s been a great addition.”

The Future

The test proved highly successful in a short timeframe, building strong momentum internally for a full rollout of social proof messaging.

Meanwhile, the accessibility of Taggstar’s Pro Plan has offered the benefits that larger companies such as Argos enjoy and allowed PSCL Beds to compete more effectively alongside such retail giants.

“Social proof is essential, especially if you’re not a well-known brand. I’m actually quite surprised, as so many big companies use it.  If they are using it, even if they’re such known brands, you know it definitely brings more conversion. I would say to anyone, if you have an e-commerce business and are selling high-value items, it is definitely worth investing. It’s an excellent, transformative technology for smaller businesses, as well as corporate giants.”

“The team at Taggstar were very professional and approachable – it was super easy to work with Taggstar.”

Marjorie Leonidas, CEO at Taggstar, says: “PSCL Beds took a proactive approach, seeing social proof messaging in action on Argos and understanding that the technology could work well for its business too. Our Social Proof Pro Plan is built on the same technology that enterprise customers such as Argos use, but is specifically designed for smaller brands and retailers looking to accelerate their online growth, offering easy templates and a cost-effective route to social proof messaging success.”
